The Daily Office: Marking God's Time

Marking the hours of each day with prayer is a practice that originated in ancient times. The Rule of St. Benedict set forth that the monastic community was to gather every  three hours to pray together. This practice was carried over into the Book of Common Prayer in the Daily Office of Morning and Evening Prayer.

Many Episcopalians pray these services on a daily basis. The office services include a psalm, canticles, and readings from scripture. Saying the Daily Office allows one to follow the contours of the Church Year as it unfolds through daily bible readings.

Below are links to online resources containing the office, the readings of the day, and reflections on these readings.

Forward Movement Publications

Forward Day by Day is a collection of reflections on the readings of the day from the Daily Office published by Forward Movement Publications, an Episcopal publishing house.
