Adult New Orleans Mission Trip, May 24 – May 30, 2009

Christ Church is sending a mission team to New Orleans this spring. Working with the Episcopal Diocese of Louisiana to rebuild houses, the group will undertake projects such as hanging wallboard, installing flooring and insulation, and painting. The team will leave on Sunday, May 24 and return on Saturday, May 30.

This is an opportunity to build on the earlier work of Episcopal Church volunteers who have made major contributions to the reconstruction of the city. The trip will influence the faith journeys of all participants, including those who travel, those who support the team from the Washington area, and those whom the group helps.

Please attend an informational meeting on Saturday, April 11 at 10:00 AM in the St. John Room or contact trip leader, Paul Currer at 703-525-2870 to learn more information. Click here to send Paul an email.

About this ministry:

Christ Church works closely with the Episcopal Diocese of Louisiana (EDOLA) to support those affected by hurricanes Katrina and Rita.

We:

·  Provide volunteers to help clean out and rebuild houses.

·  Contribute financial aid.

·  Donate needed supplies.

EDOLA’s house gutting and rebuilding work focuses on the poor, the elderly, and the fragile.  Hundreds of houses have been gutted in the greater New Orleans area since August 2005.  The Diocese has now started the rebuilding phase, where volunteers hang drywall, paint, install insulation, and undertake basic landscaping.

No special expertise is required to be on a house rebuilding team, but volunteers must be at least 16 years of age.  The teams are led by trained EDOLA staffers who teach volunteers how to undertake the work.  The team leaders also ensure that appropriate safety precautions are followed and that adequate water, food, and rest breaks are undertaken.

Non-physically strenuous opportunities also exist for volunteers who wish to feed the hungry, dispense medical care, help residents obtain relief funds, and support EDOLA’s mobile units that provide food and other needed supplies for the many who are still struggling.

Evenings are left open for volunteers to enjoy the uniquely American New Orleans culture.

Katrina and Rita struck two years ago, but great needs persist.  Christ Church is committed to providing continuing opportunities for those who wish to support these relief efforts.
