The Ladrey Senior High Rise Ministry was established to assist low income residents to participate in various activities and develop personal relationships with these low income seniors, many having limited social contact.

Ministry Needs

Individuals with a friendly demeanor, interest in seniors, sensitivity and the ability to listen and to relate to individuals with limited resources. For Bingo, help shop for prizes, or solicit prizes from parishioners; help seniors who have difficulty with Bingo play; read out numbers of winning Bingo cards to caller; and serve snacks and beverages to Bingo players. For transportation assistance, transport seniors at Ladrey for medical appointments and to visit fellow hospitalized residents.

Pick up resident's prescriptions at Potomac Yards Target and Old Town CVS, assist in completion of pharmaceutical firms' form for free or reduced prescriptions of medications prescribed by a physician for residents' chronic at-risk health conditions. For food distribution assistance, assist seniors to complete eligibility forms, bag groceries and distribute them to shut-in and disabled senior residents.

Training Provided

None is necessary. Supervision is available by experienced volunteers or the ARHA Senior Services Coordinator (social worker).

Meetings and Time Required

For Bingo: at Ladrey High Rise, 300 Wythe Street, the second Thursday of each month from 6:15 to 8:30 PM. For transportation, as needed. Prescription pick up could be on established schedule one day a week to free Senior Services Coordinator for other professional duties. For food distribution, at the Ladrey the last Saturday of every month (January to October, no distribution in November and second Saturday in December). Six months commitment is preferred, although many activities could be a single month's commitment.

Benefits

A rewarding experience serving others who are less fortunate. Meeting fellow parishioners and volunteers, and forming new and unexpected friendships.
